Invitation to OMT Doctoral Student and Junior Faculty Research

Development Workshop – “Different Ways of Seeing and Communicating Research”

OFEL Conference, Dubrovnik, April 17-18, 2020

Dear fellow scholars,

We are glad to announce the call for the Doctoral Student and Junior Faculty Research Development Workshop organized in collaboration with the Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Division of the Academy of Management and hosted by the OFEL conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on April 17th and 18th 2020.

The confirmed workshop leaders (for now) are: Professor Santi Furnari (Cass Business School) OMT Representative at Large, editorial board member of Academy Management Review, Organization Studies, Organization Theory and Strategic Organization; Professor Nelson Phillips (Imperial College Business School), Editor-in-Chief of Innovation: Organization & Management and the Editor of the Cambridge Elements Series in Organizational Theory, editorial board member of Academy of Management Journal, and past division chair of OMT; and Professor Juliane Reinecke associate editor of Organization Theory, associate editor of Business Ethics Quarterly, and editorial board member of Organization, Organization Studies and Journal of Management Studies.

Doctoral students and junior faculty at all levels are encouraged to participate, especially if they are in the process of submitting, or are planning to submit a paper to an academic journal. The main objectives of the workshop is to strengthen participants’ capacity to effectively “communicate” their research to a targeted audience, particularly when using “less conventional” methodological approaches and empirical settings. The workshop will thus contain sessions on: choosing and communicating your methodological approach, problem vs paradigm-driven research, choosing and communicating your empirical setting(s) etc.

The speakers will illustrate, discuss and give advice for each of these issues, explain their importance in the review and editorial process in top academic journals, and share their experience – as authors, reviewers, and editors – in “communicating” and publishing research through a variety of paradigms, methodological approaches, and empirical settings.

In addition to the lectures by scholars, there will be roundtable discussions in which participants will get feedback from workshop lecturers and other participants on the extended abstract of papers that they would like to submit to a specific journal. In order to apply for the workshop, applicants should send us their CV and a short motivation letter explaining why they would like to attend this workshop. Participants that would like to get feedback on their abstract, should attach an extended abstract (max 5 pages, double spaced, font 12), along with a note to which journal they would like to submit their paper.

Applications should be sent to m.radic@lse.ac.uk. We receive applications for the workshop until the 10th of March 2020. However, participation will be confirmed on a rolling basis, so we encourage applicants to apply as soon as possible.

The attendance at the workshop is free of charge. However, participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.

All participants will be offered lunch and light refreshments throughout the day. The conference also includes extracurricular activities like a gala dinner, the closing ceremony, and trips to explore the beauties of the city of Dubrovnik and its region, which you can take part in for a small fee.

The workshop will be held at the University of Dubrovnik, Department of Economics and Business Economics (address: Lapadska obala 7, 20000 Dubrovnik, Croatia).

For more information on the workshop please contact the workshop organizer Mislav Radic, Postdoctoral Fellow at the London School of Economics, at m.radic@lse.ac.uk
