    Dear Colleagues,

We invite submissions for a symposium on Algorithmic Management that we plan for the Academy of Management Annual Meeting on August 5-9, 2022 in Seattle. We are currently preparing a proposal for a Presenter Symposium entitled "Algorithms in the Workplace: Advances and Challenges in Managing Employees, Business, and Society."

This symposium aims to explore the potential benefits and challenges of using algorithms in managing workforces as considered by multiple stakeholders, including employees, managers, organizations, unions, policymakers, governments, and supranational entities. The symposium will also discuss the ethical and social responsibility issues that arise from new technologies and their application in management. We particularly welcome submissions that theorize, measure, and empirically test the implications of algorithms in managing employees' relationships and daily activities with a variety of organizational contexts in different jurisdictions.

With that in mind, we would like to invite you to submit a paper to our symposium. If you are interested in presenting a paper that fits within the symposium's theme, please let us know by sending an initial short abstract (200 words) to Maggie Cheng (maggie.cheng@concordia.ca) or Yu-Ping Chen (yu-ping.chen@concordia.ca) by December 15th, 2021.

Important deadlines to keep in mind:

    • December 15th: Initial short Abstract
    • December 17th: Decision on Abstract.
    • December 23rd: Detailed Abstract (Two- to five-page synopsis of your paper as per AOM style)
    • January 4th: Revised Detailed Abstract incorporating feedback of the organizers
    • January 11th: Symposium submission by organizers
    • End of March: Notification of Acceptance of the Symposium by AOM
    • July 10th: Paper to be emailed to the Symposium Discussant to read before the conference.

On a separate note, submissions chosen for this symposium will be fast-tracked for consideration in a special issue in Digital Business Journal on Algorithmic management (announcement forthcoming in 2022). Digital Business is a newly established peer-reviewed, open-access academic journal that aims to publish original research articles, reviews, and reports on the digitalization of business, how digital technologies impact business models, and what this means for the future of work. The journal specifically encourages submissions from diverse fields and areas of practice, from business, economics, marketing, sociology, and potentially computer science and information technology management. Please indicate whether you wish your paper to be considered for the special issue and you may reach out to Pamela Lirio (pamela.lirio@umontreal.ca) for further inquiries.

We look forward to receiving your initial abstract by December 15th.

    Warm Regards,

Simon Pek, Assistant Professor of Sustainability and Organizational Theory, University of Victoria
Maggie M. Cheng, Assistant Professor in Management, Concordia University

Yu-Ping Chen, Associate Professor in Management, Concordia University

Pamela Lirio, Associate Professor of Digital HR, Université de Montréal; Digital Business Journal (Elsevier) Editorial Board
