What are the implications of changing a name?
    Wednesday 12 August, 1.00pm - 2.30pm, UK Time

In this special event hosted by Professor Andre Spicer and Professor Caroline Wiertz, we will welcome Professor Derek Alderman (University of Tennessee), Professor Mary Ann Glynn (Boston College), Dr Marius Luedicke (Business School – formerly Cass), Professor Corrado Giulietti (University of Southampton) and Professor Simon Duncan (University of Bradford).

Following the Black Lives Matter protests, many organisations have started to reflect on who they are. An NFL team has changed its names. So have some university are reconsidering theirs. Our own business school has started the process of changing its name. If we have learned one thing these past weeks, it’s that names are important. They are important to our identity, they are important as sites of power struggles, they are important as signifiers of our culture, and they are important as brands. As a result, changing a name is a complex process that provokes strong reactions. Our community is experiencing this first hand right now since the announcement that we are dropping “Cass” from the business school’s name due to our former namesake’s historical links to slavery. As we contemplate the name change process ahead of us, we want to take a moment to pause and ask: What are the implications of changing a name?
