The Centre for Social Innovation of Trinity Business School is delighted to invite you to the next event of the virtual Trinity Business Ethics Speaker Series.

The guest speaker for the upcoming event on Jan 21, 5 pm Dublin time is Valerie Soon, who is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Philosophy at Duke University. Her research focuses on the relationship between individuals and social structures, especially the emergence of large-scale injustice from many individual actions that are unremarkable in isolation.

She will talk about the topic "The Justice Failures Approach to Recommender Systems". Thanks to recommender systems, a type of information filtering system, our online lives are highly personalized. Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, and many other platforms employ such systems to show us content that is highly relevant to our preferences, thereby increasing search efficiency. But recommender systems have also been blamed for increasing social segregation online, resulting in societal ills such as political polarization. On what basis do firms have an obligation to ameliorate these ills?

The series is delivered online and will usually be presented at 5 pm Dublin time on Thursdays throughout the academic year, exploring important contemporary issues in the field of business ethics. Leading international scholars and practitioners will present their insights on a wide range of topics, including corporate sustainability, responsible business, corporate corruption, ethics in a digital age, corporate agency as well as business and human rights.

The sessions are open to all Trinity staff, students and the general public. The full schedule with dates and registration links is available here:
