A Postdoctoral Fellow Position at McGill University to study emergent and novel forms of knowledge co-production and collaboration in the biomedical open science

    Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Start Date: Summer or Fall 2021
Application deadline: Position is open until filled. Only short-listed candidates will be notified. Salary: To be negotiated
Duration: 1 year, with possibility of extension subject to performance and funding

Professor Alberto Cambrosio, a Science & Technology Studies scholar (Department of Social Studies of Medicine and Department of Sociology, McGill University) and Professor Samer Faraj, a Management and Organization scholar (Faculty of Management and Department of Social Studies of Medicine, McGill University) are seeking a talented Postdoctoral Fellow to participate in an exciting project to study emergent and novel forms of knowledge co-production and collaboration in the biomedical sciences (e.g., initiatives such as the Cancer Genome Atlas, the Genome Data Analysis Network). The project is interdisciplinary and involves close collaboration with a small group of scholars with strengths in the analysis of technology and new forms of organizing. The thematic focus is on how data and algorithm-driven forms of science are transforming modern research practices and are increasingly characterized by the presence of large-scale networks and consortia connecting hundreds of investigators from dozens of organizations across several countries. A crucial role in this growing trend is played by open science, an emerging practice of organizing collaborative research that posits free access to research papers as well as disclosure of data and supporting research material in order to improve the credibility of scholarship and foster scientific collaboration. The goal of the proposed research is to map, compare, and contrast how open science is emerging across two different fields: neuroscience and cancer research. To this end, the project seeks to perform a detailed investigation of the knowledge co-production and collaboration that unfold in platforms that support the open science principles.

Combining our expertise in Science & Technology Studies and in Organization Studies, the successful candidate will study one or more emerging medical science consortia over a two-year period, using a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods such as: quantitative analysis of digital archives, network analysis, observational analysis of meetings and the interactions between participants, and interviews with participants regarding collaboration practices and issues. The research will investigate the converging and diverging development patterns, focusing on how knowledge-sharing practices are linked to specific kinds of problematization, i.e. specific ways of defining, framing, and organizing their activities and the substantive issues they analyze. The main objective of this research is to investigate the mutually constitutive dynamics of organizational and epistemic innovation, i.e. the nexus between new ways of experimenting and novel forms of organizing.

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, self-driven, familiar with qualitative research methods but also comfortable with basic quantitative analysis. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., STS, Sociology, Management, Anthropology, etc.) within the last three years and demonstrate potential to publish in highly-ranked journals. They should also have experience in all aspects of qualitative study research, including skills in building and managing a database of research materials; experience with observation and interview techniques, familiarity with data coding; facility in using interpretive methods and network analysis; and the preparation of manuscripts in cooperation with supervisors. In addition, they should have fluency in written and spoken English, the ability to work cooperatively, and strong organizational skills.
