Call for Papers: Journal of Business Venturing Special Issue on "Hype and entrepreneurship: Expectations, exaggerations and misrepresentations"

We invite scholars to submit papers that examine the implications of hype for entrepreneurship. Hype is both a cause and consequence of entrepreneurial activities, has both venture-level and industry-level effects, and raises significant moral issues. Hype also galvanizes attention, especially when amplified by digital technologies, leading to resources that can easily be depleted, as is evident in cases such as cryptocurrency. Yet, despite its multi-faceted role in entrepreneurship, hype remains under-researched by entrepreneurship scholars.

Theoretical and empirical papers are welcome that address questions such as: How do hype cycles emerge in entrepreneurial fields? How does entrepreneurial decision-making around new technologies and exotic business models affect hype and vice versa? What are the moral implications for entrepreneurs and concerned stakeholders? What is the role of media and digital technologies in enabling entrepreneurial hype cycles?

Special issue editors: Raghu Garud, Nelson Phillips, Yuliya Snihur, Llewellyn D. W. Thomas, Charlene Zietsma @Journal of Business Venturing

    Submission deadline: June 1, 2023
