    Call for Chapters:

Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and Strategy

    Edward Elgar Publishing, UK

    Editors

Felipe Csaszar (University of Michigan), Nan Jia (University of Southern California)

    The Handbook

AI has the potential to disrupt much of strategy, from formulation to implementation and from theory to practice. However, understanding how this disruption will occur is challenging. For example, it is unclear which aspects of the strategy process will change first and how. It is also uncertain which industries, processes, and theories will be most affected. The interactions between AI and strategy are multifaceted and complex. Thus, significant work, including new theoretical, practical, and methodological insights, will be required to thoroughly understand the interactions between AI and strategy. The handbook aims to accelerate the development of such an understanding.

More specifically, the goal of the handbook is to provide a comprehensive exploration of how AI technologies are reshaping-and have the potential to further reshape-traditional facets of strategic management. By delving into the intersection of AI and strategic management, the handbook aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to navigate the complexities of AI-driven strategic decision-making and organizational transformation.

We invite researchers from diverse fields to submit influential papers that offer novel perspectives on the intersection of AI and strategic management. The handbook welcomes a variety of submission types, including theoretical papers, empirical research, and case studies. We encourage submissions that explore potential topics and research questions within each part of the handbook, as outlined in the preliminary table of contents below. The handbook aims to set the foundations for the future study and practice of strategy and AI. Join us in this exciting endeavor to shape the discourse on AI-driven strategic decision-making and organizational transformation.

Emphasis on Diverse Perspectives, Innovation, and Methodological Diversity

This handbook sets itself apart from standard academic journals by welcoming a wide range of ideas, approaches, and styles. Another important aspect to emphasize is the range of processes we are interested in and the range of methodological approaches. We aim to create something that will influence the trajectory of the field of AI and Strategy. We believe that by embracing diverse perspectives and methodologies, the handbook will enhance discussions in ways that traditional journals cannot. As the field of AI-driven strategy is at an early stage, it is crucial to explore multiple perspectives and methodological approaches to discover the most valuable insights. Therefore, the handbook will actively encourage submissions that offer diverse perspectives to foster innovation and discovery. Because the world of AI and strategy moves rapidly, the handbook will also have a fast review process.

    Preliminary Table of Contents

The handbook will be structured into parts, each one exploring the interaction of AI with a different area of strategy. The preliminary parts of the handbook are the following:

    1. AI & Theoretical Foundations (how AI influences various strategy theories, such as TCE and RBV)
    2. AI & Strategic Decision Making (effects on strategy formulation, innovation, judgment, aspirations, search)
    3. AI & Strategic Organization (effects on governance, organizational design, structure, incentives, HR, workforce management)
    4. AI & Strategy Implementation (effects on flexibility, speed, growth)
    5. AI & Competition (effects on competitive dynamics, industry structure and evolution, geographic clusters, platforms)
    6. AI & Nonmarket Strategy (effects on stakeholder management, social movements, multiple goals, ESG, DEI)
    7. AI Application & Experiences (descriptions of software experiments and real-world applications of AI in the realm of strategy instruction and practice)
