    Dear Colleagues,
Our second meeting will be based on Hans-Georg Gadamer's seminal work, Truth and Method. This book is quite long. However, we recommend certain parts below.  We encourage everyone to read as much as possible to fully engage in our discussions.

    Recommended Parts:

    Introduction (Optional)
    •     Provides an overview of Gadamer's project. A brief skim is enough for context.
Part I: The Question of Truth as it Emerges in the Experience of Art
    •     Chapter 1: Transcending the Aesthetic Dimension – Skim, but concentrate on:
          •     Section: The significance of the humanist tradition for the human sciences
    •     Chapter 2: The Ontology of the Work of Art and Its Hermeneutic Significance (Focus on the concept of play).
          •     Gadamer introduces the idea of play as a key hermeneutic metaphor.
          •     Useful for discussing iterative, dynamic processes in organizational life.
Part II: The Extension of the Question of Truth to Understanding in the Human Sciences
    •     This is the longest Part. However social scientist may find it very informative. Find what is interesting/important to you.
Part III: The Ontological Shift Guided by Language - Skim, but concentrate on:
    •     Section: Language as the Medium of Hermeneutic Experience:
          •        Explores the role of language in shaping understanding and relationships.
          •        Great for discussions about organizational culture and communication.
Our goal is to explore how Gadamer's philosophy can inform and enrich our understanding of organization theory. Please invite your colleagues and PhD students.
