Chaire Franco-Brésilienne des Universites de L-Etat de São Paulo: Digitality and management: presenc

The Chair "Digitality and management: presence, time and space in organizations" intends to discuss the digitalization of organizations and its relationship with the space and time of managerial activities.

Digitalization includes dark and unexpected sides of the societal process, as the generalization of remote work and the “alone together” trend, the proliferation of precarious work arrangements, the increase of monopolies in digital services, as internet and platform firms. The pandemic and lockdown period pushed less digitally mature organizations to an abrupt digital transformation. They shed light on the paradoxical importance of place and space in our so-called “immaterial” world.

Indeed, digital transformation is a deep process, far beyond the use of digital technologies. “Digitality” is a way to make sense of what is going on, and to sense and to materialize our world differently. Platforms are today at the heart of this new world. Industries develop powerful platforms with multiple mobile providers orbiting those platforms, such as gig-economy firms, proliferating data collection, and processing machine learning or blockchain technologies. Decentered forms of organizing epitomize this transformation. The traditional time-space unity of work (“we all work here together at the same time”) is over for many managers. Digitalization, Digital transformation, Digital platforms are often used as interchangeable concepts and related to Datafication. Management, Accounting, Governance, and other related areas increasingly need to consider such societal transformation to understand how organizations operate, how government can regulate markets and industries, and eventually the side effects of digitalization.

The Chair will also approach several collateral effects of digitalization on society and how the transformation affects enterprises, governments, and work relationships rather than in a naïve and optimistic perspective. It turns the discussion from a positivistic paradigm to more experiential approaches (process philosophy and phenomenology-based).
