This workshop focuses on the process of launching new research projects: identifying empirical phenomena, developing research questions and methods, and identifying and getting access to appropriate and original or unusual organizational settings and data sources. Although it is commonly acknowledged that these steps blur or vary in order depending on the phenomena and the researcher, as a community, we rarely discuss this process or communicate the practical wisdom that accrues with experience. Using an interactive format, the workshop will facilitate a philosophical as well as pragmatic discussion about these issues and create an opportunity for participants to receive feedback about their own research proposals.
Presenter agenda
John-Paul Ferguson; Stanford U: Developing a coherent research program and evaluating potential data sources in light of specific research questions
Ruthanne Huising; McGill U: Going into the field without a research question and the inductive process of finding one or two along the way
Andrew Nelson; U. of Oregon: Illuminating tactics for finding data in novel places, from storage units to scrapbooks
Johanna Mair; Hertie School of Governance: Doing relevant research; conducting research in underexplored settings
Marc Ventresca; U. of Oxford: Collaborating with practitioner colleagues: Lessons from experience
Siobhan O'Mahony; Boston U.: Why we study what we do: choosing research topics over the course of a career
