    The Beckwith Professorship of Management Studies

     

     

     

    The Professorship

     

    Candidates are being sought for the Beckwith Professorship of Management Studies, which was established in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Judge</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place> through a generous benefaction to the Cambridge Foundation from Mr and Mrs Peter Beckwith. 

     

    One of the key aims of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Judge</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place> is to achieve international excellence in a number of distinct areas of research and scholarship, of which Strategy and Organization Theory are two.

     

    The successful candidate for the Beckwith Professorship will be joining a dynamic and expanding multi-disciplinary business school. He or she will be expected to add distinction through research and teaching in Strategy/ Organization Theory, as well as to demonstrate a strong interest and record of achievement in the application of his/her discipline.

     

    This position offers scholars the opportunity to lead and develop a dynamic and extremely promising but as yet small Strategy and Organization Theory group at a world-class university. Group members are publishing in leading international journals across areas as diverse as strategic alliances, product innovation and diffusion, institutional entrepreneurship, doing business in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region></st1:place>, corporate reputation, and customer service quality. The group is international with members from <st1:country-region w:st="on">Australia</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">France</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Greece</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:country-region>, The Netherlands, and the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">United Kingdom</st1:country-region></st1:place>. Members have extensive research networks with academics from other leading institutions throughout <st1:place w:st="on">North America</st1:place> and the rest of the world.

     

    This post offers a significant opportunity for research leadership and influence. The position also offers a chance to interact with business leaders as well as public policy makers. Members of the Strategy group work with some of the world's leading organisations whether through collaborative research or in an executive education capacity. <st1:city w:st="on">Cambridge</st1:city>'s location in close proximity to <st1:city w:st="on">London</st1:city> and at the same time at the centre of 'Silicon Fen', <st1:place w:st="on">Europe</st1:place>’s fastest growing technology-based industrial centre, gives unprecedented access to large multi nationals and to hundreds of smaller entrepreneurial organisations in emerging industries.

     
    Skills and Experience

Candidates will have a strong commitment to research and an established international presence and strong academic reputation in the field of strategy/ organization theory. The successful candidate will publish in leading journals and provide intellectual leadership to the relatively young and vibrant Strategy area at the School.

     

    ·        Collaboration and engagement are core values at the School. The Professor is expected to engage with colleagues in the School and the wider University, with leading academics elsewhere, as well as with leaders in business and society.

     

    ·        Impact is very important. Candidates will be keen to engage both academic and managerial audiences. They will shape the research agenda in their field and, at the same time, have a strong and visible impact on business practice or society at large.

     

     

     

    Research

     

    The Professor will produce original research of the highest calibre and foster the development of a vibrant and productive research culture in his or her subject group, based on the School’s core values of academic excellence, collaboration and engagement, and impact. Substantial investments in the School’s 10-year plan, including PhD scholarships and an earmarked Distinguished Visiting Professor scheme, support the development of an exciting research environment. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Cambridge</st1:city></st1:place> is a draw for excellent PhD students from all over the world. Professors are expected to select and supervise PhD students with a view to developing future academic leaders for the world’s top business schools.

     

     

    Teaching

     

    The Professor will contribute both specialist teaching on their own subject and core teaching for one of the subject groups – at MBA, Master of Finance, MPhil or undergraduate level.

     

    The teaching load compares favourably with most business schools in the <st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on">Europe</st1:place>. The annual requirement is the equivalent of 70 one-hour sessions (with supervision of projects/dissertations, and administrative contributions counting towards the stint). Sabbatical on full pay for one term in seven is a right; up to three sabbatical terms can be accumulated.

     

    Faculty will typically schedule their lecture-style teaching in at most two of the three terms.

     

    Executive Education

     

    Executive education is a growing activity within <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Judge</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place>. Faculty are encouraged to use the executive education stage to disseminate their research and expertise to companies and use it as one vehicle to achieve visible impact on business practice. Executive education activities are not part of faculty teaching stints and are remunerated separately.

     

     

    Administration

     

    Administrative duties are shared equitably and appropriately among faculty. The new Professor’s primary remit and focus is the development of his or her subject area though the Professor may be asked to represent his/her area in some select committees within the school dealing with such matters as academic appointments and promotions. If faculty undertake major school-wide administrative roles their teaching stint is suitably reduced.

     

    There is a normal sabbatical entitlement of one term in seven on full pay, subject to the University regulations. Up to three sabbatical terms can be accumulated.

     

    Procedure for Appointment

     

    The appointment will be made by a Board of Electors, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor or her deputy, with a membership which includes members of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Judge</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place>, members of cognate Departments and external experts.

     

    All applications will be acknowledged.  The Board of Electors will decide how they wish to proceed towards making an election, which may include interviews and/or presentations. Short-listed candidates may be invited to visit the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Judge</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place>, to give a seminar on their work and meet prospective colleagues, prior to a meeting of the Board.

     

    The standard annual salary for a Professor is £59,232.  In addition there are four Contribution Bands, each made up of six steps, taking the maximum professorial salary at the top of Band 4 to £120,408.  Salary on appointment will be determined by the Vice-Chancellor.  Professorial salaries are reviewed biennially on the basis of research, teaching and general contribution, by the Vice-Chancellor with the assistance of a small Advisory Committee.
