PDW: Methodological Choices and Theoretical Developments in Institutional Theory

When: Saturday August 4 from 8:00am-12:00pm

    Where: Sheraton Independence West

This PDW is set up to explore the interrelations between methodology and theory in institutional thinking. We aim to reflect upon how our research methods chart a space of possibilities –  enabling, but also constraining, what research questions can be asked and answered. To that end, we gathered a set of scholars who are all well known and highly regarded in the field – Thomas D'Aunno, Karen Golden- Biddle, Kate Kellogg, Renate Meyer, Kamal Munir – but who come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Their research spans different methodological approaches – quantitative, qualitative and mix methods. Using examples from their own research, they will reflect on the interrelations between methodology and theory.

The discussant, Royston Greenwood, will offer a broader, critical and provocative overview of the issue, and will set the ground for round-table discussions, in which the participants will have an opportunity to reflect upon their own methodological choices and their consequences, and identify opportunities to widen their methodological tool kit either through the combined use of existing qualitative and quantitative research methods or through the use of innovative methodologies. Finally, back in the plenum, we will summarize guidelines and suggestions for a more mindful, reflective and creative approach to fitting between research questions, specific theoretical framing and research methods .

No pre-registration is required. We hope you can join us.
