This PDW will provide an opportunity to discuss and critically reflect on the issue of leadership development. Organizations are seeking new and innovative strategies to develop their leaders to be adequately prepared for the myriad challenges presented in the global workplace. It seems more critical than ever that leadership scholars and practitioners work more closely to clarify critical development needs, identify innovative, research-based strategies for developing leaders, and build partnerships to evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies. In this workshop, we will (1) discuss the challenges organizations face in developing leaders, (2) identify gaps between science and practice in the area of leader development, and (3) begin to identify strategies for closing this gap. We offer a highly interactive workshop involving scholars and practitioners.
First, in Identifying Leadership Development Challenges, you will have the opportunity to hear from three practitioners and learn about the most pressing challenges they currently face as well as best practices. They will describe the competencies their organizations develop and their unique processes or strategies for developing leaders. They will share what is working well and the significant challenges that remain.
Next, in Identifying the Gaps Between Science and Practice, you will hear three presentations from faculty at the Center for Organizational Leadership at the University of Cincinnati to summarize leadership development through the lens of three disciplines: Psychology, Management, and Communication
Finally, following the presentations, in Identifying Strategies for Closing the Gap, we will facilitate large and small group discussions with all PDW participants to clarify the gap between science and practice in the area of leadership development as well as strategies for collaborating with one another to close the gap. Participants will rotate roundtables and engage in small group discussions to brainstorm future research questions and strategies for scientists and practitioners to work collaboratively to close the existing gap.
