    From Coding to Construction:

Building and Elaborating Theoretical Models in Qualitative Research

Friday, August 5, 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center

Are you looking for guidance on honing in on your theoretical contribution for your qualitative study?

Do you need feedback on how to transform your coding into a theoretical model?

Do you need advice on submitting your qualitative study to a top journal?

"From Coding to Construction: Building and Elaborating Theoretical Models in Qualitative Research" offers two opportunities to engage with expert scholars in qualitative methods on building theoretical models, honing in on theoretical contribution, and tips for submitting your work to top journals in our field.

The first half of the session (starting at 2 PM) is open to everyone and includes presentations on moving from data structure to theoretical model, editor's tips for submitting qualitative research to top journals, and advice from a panel of expert scholars.

The second half of the session will be for junior faculty and post docs who have applied in advance to receive focused feedback on their qualitative study. For more information on applying for the second half of this session, please see below.

Panelists, presenters, and facilitators include: Blake Ashforth, Tima Bansal, Jean Bartunek, Kevin Corley, Kim Elsbach, Spencer Harrison, Jennifer Howard-Grenville, Curtis LeBaron, Mike Pratt, Bess Rouse, Anne Smith, and John Paul Stephens

The PDW is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 5 from 2:00-5:30 PM at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Information on the submissions for the feedback session:

Potential applicants: Junior faculty and post docs who have a qualitative study for which they have ideally completed coding and are looking for feedback and guidance on their working theoretical model or honing in on their theoretical contribution

    Submissions should include the following:

    1.      A 200 word (max) abstract of your study with 3-4 keywords that capture your topic and/or method to help best match participants with facilitators*

    2.      A 1,000 word (max) description of your project, including:

    a.       Your research question(s)

    b.      A brief description of the method(s) being used

    c.       Coding data structure table if applicable (if you have a grounded theory study, you can submit a Gioia table or a table with codes, definitions, and brief exemplar quotes)

    d.      Your working theoretical model with narrative description or a summary of your key findings and anticipated theoretical contribution

    e.       What you most hope to gain feedback on during the session and why

Submission deadline: 11:59pm EDT on June 3; acceptance notices will be sent starting at the end of June.

Please email all application material to codingtoconstruction2016@gmail.com. (Note: the email address for submissions has been updated.) Please contact Nathan Tong at tongmn@mail.uc.edu with any questions.

*Once accepted, we will do our best to match participants to table facilitators based on facilitator methodological expertise and/or common theoretical interests.
