Getting Beyond the First Page: World-Class Scholars and Authors on the Craft of Writing a Book

Program Session: 259 | Submission: 11455 | Sponsors: OB, OMT, BPS
Scheduled: Saturday, August 8, 2015, 8:00AM – 10:00AM at Hyatt Regency Vancouver in Regency Ballroom C

During their careers, many academics, including those in management and organization studies, entertain the idea of writing a book. While books provide a visible and flexible platform for communicating one's ideas to a variety of audiences, aspiring book writers face a number of challenges. What audience is one seeking to reach? How does one pitch a book concept? Attract the services of a publisher or agent? Navigate the intellectual and emotional challenges of writing a book? Ensure that, upon its completion, the book actually gets read? There are few if any formal resources to address these questions-academic training in many instances is focused exclusively on mastering the ability of publishing in academic journals. The purpose of our workshop, thus, is to provide answers to these questions. To this end, we have brought together a world-class set of scholars and authors who will share their insights and advice on the process of writing books. In addition to learning about the craft of writing and publishing books, we will consider the question of how focusing one's time on writing a book fits into our academic careers -careers that often do not directly reward the publication of books. Structurally, this workshop encompasses author presentations, a panel discussion, and breakout sessions. Through this multifaceted, interactive format, we aim to help attendees determine whether book writing is for them, how book production fits into different kinds of academic careers, and how best to initiate and manage the book writing process to get a book project into print.
