Privatizing the Public Sphere?
Exploring the Roles of Nonprofit Organizations in a Neoliberal Democracy
Saturday August 11th from 3:15-5:15
Marriott Chicago Downtown, Chicago A, B
Are you interested in the roles that socially-oriented private organizations, including nonprofits and philanthropy, play in determining public needs within a democratic state? Given the dispersed and diverse nature of such research, the primary goal of the PDW is to begin to cultivate and nurture a research community. We hope that the PDW will begin conversations and collaborations between individuals and universities, with the goal of working together to set and advance a research agenda. Within the two-hour, highly interactive workshop we will explore new trends in how nonprofit organizations and philanthropic institutions are engaging in public policy and implementation processes; and raise questions about the broader effects of nonprofit activities on democratic governance and on the nonprofit and philanthropic sector overall. Leading scholars from diverse fields will provide insights and provocative ideas to spur discussion. We hope to continue this conversation in future symposia.
How to Apply
Applicants are asked to submit a 250-500 word description of a research project they have completed, are currently undertaking, or contemplating that intersects with the PDW theme. Email your abstract to eato0074@umn.edu by 31st July 2018 with subject heading: AoM PDW. Please include details on your research question(s), data sources, and key puzzles you are grappling with, along with keywords that describe your topic. After applications are received, we, the organizers, will do our best to cluster participants and discussants (see below) to ensure a variety of rich discussion. Participants will receive the submitted descriptions from each member of the table before the PDW. Please note, however, pre-registration is NOT REQUIRED and all participants are free to attend and sit at any table.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
