    Professional Organization Research:
    Collegiality, Collaboration and Competition

Research on professionals and their workplaces is becoming increasingly popular, reflecting the growing importance of experts and other knowledge workers in contemporary society (Empson, et al., 2015). Following successful PDWs over the last five years on various issues in professional organization research, this year we turn our attention to some core constructs that characterize these contexts: Collegiality, or the spirit of camaraderie for fellow professionals even on opposing sides of an issue; collaboration, a core ethic whereby professionals are trained and acculturated to work together; and competition, somewhat antithetical to the professional ethos, but increasingly pervasive these days, especially in many deregulated sectors. The PDW will begin with three presentations by our panelists on contemporary aspects of collegiality, collaboration and competition (details on topics and presenters below). These will be followed by a question/answer session. Thereafter we will divide into three round tables, each around one of the panelists. The PDW will also afford opportunity for small group interactions with our expert panelists and organizers.
