This PDW follows on successful hybrid organizations PDWs at past AoM meetings by bringing leading scholars together to discuss a growing stream of research that investigates the functioning of social enterprises that pursue social missions through business ventures. In the presence of social strife, these hybrid organizations present themselves as market-based solutions to social problems such as poverty, unemployment, and environmental degradation. Research on hybrids has grown quickly, but also raises new questions. To what degree can the forms, practices, and roles identified in hybrid organizations research inform the much broader fields of business and charity, both in terms of conceptualization and practice? Going forward, will we as management researchers view hybrid organizations in terms of their uniqueness, or for what they can teach us about management in general? We hope you will join us for a provocative discussion about the future of the field.
