    Strategic Leadership and Governance

Doctoral Student and Junior Faculty Workshop

    Thursday, March 28 (noon-4:30)

The Strategic Leadership and Governance Interest Group is sponsoring an early career workshop at the upcoming Strategic Management Society Special Conference in Las Vegas.  The workshop is designed to be an interactive session where doctoral students and early-career faculty members will interact with faculty in a set of small group discussions on critical issues for early career scholars. This workshop is open to all conference attendees who are either currently in their doctoral program or in the pre-tenure years of their faculty career.  The objective of the workshop is to facilitate networking and discussion around the professional challenges, problems and opportunities scholars face as they embark on their career and start to build their presence in the community.

At the workshop, we will begin with a panel discussion of the key lessons the faculty panelists have on successfully managing early career phases.  We will then have two panel discussions on staking out an identity as a scholar and methods in leadership research.  We will also have a series of breakout table discussions to delve into critical topics for early career scholars.  Some table discussions will center on issues relevant specifically to doctoral students, such as the job search process and managing your dissertation.  Other tables will focus on issues that are relevant to both doctoral students and junior faculty, such as managing career transitions, building your profile in the community, keys for effectively framing a research question, and managing an R&R.  Each table will be led by one or two faculty panelists.  Participants will have an opportunity to choose the table discussions over a series of three discussion periods. The table discussions will be followed by a session in which participants can ask any relevant issues that were not discussed at the tables.

Participants will interact with a panel of faculty members including Christine Shropshire (Arizona State), Mike Mannor (Notre Dame), Karen Schnatterly (Missouri), Guoli Chen (INSEAD), Gerry McNamara (Michigan State), Steve Boivie (Texas A&M), Lingling Pan (Pittsburgh), and Tim Hubbard (Notre Dame).

Through the generous support of the SMS, we will be able to offer a limited number of conference fee waivers for attendees.

The workshop is co-chaired by Gerry McNamara (Michigan State) and Lingling Pan (Pittsburgh). For more information regarding the workshop or to express an interest in participating, please go to https://www.strategicmanagement.net/las-vegas/workshops/early-career-workshop.  To complete an application, you will need to submit a cv and 100-200 word research statement. The deadline for applications is January 15, but to have the best chance at receiving a conference fee waiver, we recommend applying early.
