22st EGOS (European Group for Organizational Studies) Colloquium - Call for Papers
6-8 July 2006, Bergen, Norway
EGOS sub-theme 15: Metaphor, tropes and discourse - implications for organization studies
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO THE 27TH OF JANUARY
The 20th anniversary of Morgan's (1986) landmark book Images of Organization serves as an opportune moment to reflect on the considerable amount of work done on metaphor and other tropes (synecdoche, irony, metonymy) and discourse (narrative, storytelling, rhetorics) within the field of organization studies. Indeed, since Morgan's groundbreaking work in this
area in the early 1980s, a variety of definitions and distinctions have been proposed that have both advanced and challenged Morgan's characterization of metaphor as constitutive of the field. Work on discourse analysis in particular has attempted to offset the role of metaphor by drawing attention to other discursive and linguistic constructions (e.g., narratives, storytelling) for representing and understanding organizations. This conceptual expansion of the study of language and organization has in recent years been complemented by empirical studies of the use of metaphors, tropes, narrative, storytelling, rhetorics and organizational discourse. Despite the promising nature of this work, and the progress made, many questions still remain.
The convenors of this sub-theme believe that much is to be gained from a serious reflection on metaphor, tropes and discourse, in terms of assessing the current state of scholarship and research that uses these discursive and linguistic constructions. Theoretical and empirical papers are invited to this end; and the convenors encourage contributions from different disciplinary perspectives, including sociology, cognitive science, linguistics, discursive psychology, literary criticism and critical research. In general, our goal is to encourage creative and imaginative contributions that are theoretically and/or empirically novel and engaging.
The deadline for submission of abstracts and/or papers is the 6th of
January, 2006. For further information please see www.egosnet.org
