HOT AND COLD CONTEXTS FOR LEARNING IN ORGANIZATIONS Sub-theme 36, EGOS 2006 / Bergen, Norway / July 6-8 / Call for Papers CALL FOR PAPERS: During the past decades organizational knowledge and learning have become one of the central fields of organizational inquiry. Observations of learning in terms of productivity gains (at the organizational or unit level), for example, does not provide much information about learning at the individual level. This issue also relates to intermediate levels (such as teams), and how they might play a role in the transformation from individual to organizational learning. Accordingly, there is a need for a more detailed theoretical analysis and empirical investigation of individual learning as a basic building block of organizational learning. One important challenge in this regard relates to how learning from experience should be conceptualized or characterized. One question that then arises is how to integrate theory and findings related to formal learning with research on learning-by-doing and other modes of informal learning. Another interesting question is why some learning modes or learning situations have greater impact on learning outcomes than others. Last but not least there are a number of conditions that can affect learning processes among individual employees. In the same vein, little is known about the relation between emotions and organizational learning. These latter conditions we tentatively label the "hot" aspects of learning, whereas "cold" refers to inputs of the learning process (such as training or specific experiences). We invite academic papers that investigate individual learning as it relates to the organizational context. Possible topics for this sub-theme accordingly include (but are not restricted to): ??? The relation between organizational change efforts and learning among employees and decision makers; ??? The benefits of training for trainees as well as co-workers ??? The influence of emotions on individual learning; ??? Formal training as a trigger of informal learning; ??? The role of trust in interpersonal learning; ??? The contribution of leadership to learning; ??? Organizational culture as a context for workplace learning; ??? The contribution of cross-functional teams to individual learning; ???
