PDW GOALS
The goal of this PDW is to assist scholars who are beginning to, or are currently involved in, work on M&A by familiarizing them with the theoretical opportunities and analytical issues that they will encounter. Mergers and acquisitions offer a unique window into a variety of organizational topics, including:
- Knowledge transfer and innovation
- Entrepreneurial decision-making under uncertainty
- Organizational learning and dynamic capabilities
- Negotiation and bargaining
- Organization design and coordination
- Organizational culture: change and conflicts
- Trust and its inter-organizational dynamics
- Corporate growth and scope (diversification)
The workshop format is designed to provide a deep yet broad coverage of research strategies and methodologies, and should prove very useful for both the novice researcher as well as those who have attained expertise in one facet of M&A research and wish to extend their interests to other facets.
The workshop will be organized in two parts. The first focuses on the use of M&A as an empirical setting for the exploration of theoretical issues in the wider organizational or managerial terrain. The second part of the workshop offers a set of reflections on the methodological challenges facing M&A scholars in their attempt to speak to the broader audience in the management field.
