Dear Strategy Colleagues

I come from a strategy background in business but I'm trying to put together a resource list for the public sector

I'm looking for professors, researchers, grad students, consultants/ experts and "practitioners" that are interested the topics of strategic thinking and strategic planning in government, NGO's and public organizations.

Is there a specific list on the internet that addresses this topic, or is it part of a more general discussion on a wider strategy list?

What are the classic papers on the topic?

What about a specific journal? or newsletter? or Blog ?

BTW. Can anyone recommend an updated version of textbooks in strategic thinking and planning in government equivalent to

John Bryson's 1970's classic textbook:.Strategic Planning in Public and Nonprofit Organizations, which I think may be out of print.

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions

    Dear Walter,

I know of two books from the 90s that are still frequently used (one of which is an update of Bryson's 1970 book):

    · Bryce, H. 1992. Financial and Strategic Management for Nonprofit Organizations. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall.

    · Bryson, J.M. 1995. Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass.

Mark Moore also wrote a great article in 2000 in which he compares the nature of "strategy" in public, private, and nonprofit organizations. It's especially useful for orienting business-oriented researchers and students to strategic decision-making in the public and nonprofit sectors:

    · Moore, Mark. 2000. Managing for Value: Organizational Strategy in For-Profit, Nonprofit, and Governmental Organizations. Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly 29(1): 183-208.

I don't know of any specific journal on strategy for either the public or nonprofit sector, but you may want to check out the 446-page public administration research and information resources bibliography that's found at the bottom of the ASPA web site: http://www.aspanet.org/scriptcontent/index.cfm

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Greg

Jim Collins has just published a "good to great' volume for the services sector which I'm told is very good, though I haven't read it.

    Cheers,

A classic book that lots of folks in the public management field read is
Mark H. Moore, Creating Public Value.
