    Entrepreneurship outside Enterprise

    22 September 2006, 11.00 - 16.15

A one day symposium organized by the Warwick
    Organization Theory Network,

    Warwick Business School, UK

Full Time MBA Teaching Centre, Room A2

In the past twenty-five years we have witnessed the
unprecedented spread of the concept of
entrepreneurship. The idea of enterprise has moved out
of its heart land of small businesses and into most
sectors of social and economic life. We now talk about
employees of large corporations as intrapreneurs,
government officers as public sector entrepreneurs,
    policy makers as institutional entrepreneurs,
gangsters as violent entrepreneurs, and charities as
engaging in social entrepreneurship. We would like to
ask: what are the theoretical, social, and political
implications of such a radical generalization of
    entrepreneurship?

In order to explore this question, The Warwick
Organization Theory Network is organizing a one day
    symposium on ‘entrepreneurship outside enterprise’.
The aim is to explore whether the idea of
entrepreneurship is applicable and relevant outside
the formal business enterprise. During the day we will
    explore three specific areas:

    1. Institutional entrepreneurship. In this
session we will consider the potential of
    institutional entrepreneurship as a theoretical
    framework for understanding entrepreneurship of
    different kinds.

    2. Enterprise in the public sector. In this session
we will look at the rise of entrepreneurship in public
    sector organizations.

    3. Social entrepreneurship. During this session we
will explore the concept of social entrepreneurship,
and its application in different sectors of the
    economy.

Each part of the symposium will comprise two
presentations, and some time for discussion and
    feedback from the audience.

Speakers include: Colin Crouch (Warwick University),
Bernard Leca (Nottingham University), Alex Nicholls
(Oxford University), Rob Paton (Open University),
    Markus Perkmann (Loughborough University), Nelson
    Phillips (Imperial College).
