In this PDW we aim to spur conversation about the potential for identity and institutional theories to come together in ways that cast light on a blind spot in both traditions - how cultural forces at micro and macro levels shape, and are shaped by, entrepreneurial action in emerging fields (Lounsbury et al, 2003; Sine & Lee, 2009). In particular, we hope to surface research possibilities embodied in the interplay between situational and transformational mechanisms in such contexts (Hedstrom & Swedberg, 1998). By integrating micro-level identity factors and macro-level institutional factors, researchers may be able to gain more robust insight into how actors imagine novel organizations and fields, navigate institutional voids, and contribute to institutional infrastructures which shape the horizon for action and identity claims in a field. Also, bringing identity more discretely into institutional analysis may enhance our understanding of the sources of plurality within fi
elds (Kraatz & Block, 2008). David Whetten, Mark Kennedy, and Wesley Sine will be on hand to present some provocative ideas as thought starters for our discussion.
