    AOM ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM

    AUGUST 7-8, 2009

The 2009 OB Doctoral Consortium will be held on August 7 and 8 as part of pre-conference program at the <st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename> meeting in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Chicago</st1:city></st1:place>.

The consortium includes an interesting and energetic mix of presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions designed to launch doctoral students into their academic careers. The consortium will begin on Friday evening with an informal development and networking session with participating students and faculty. The main program on Saturday will include faculty presentations and roundtable sessions on topics such as landing the right academic job, building and maintaining a successful publishing record, preparing for effective teaching, and managing work-life balance as well as a "Meet the Editors" panel and ethics workshop. The Saturday program will also feature a keynote address from John Schaubroeck, the John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Management at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Michigan</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">University</st1:placetype></st1:place> and the current editor of OBHDP.

We encourage advisors to nominate students for the consortium. To keep the faculty-participant ratio to an optimal size, the number of participants will be limited. This has been a popular program, so apply early!

The deadline for receipt of nominations and supporting materials is May 20, 2009.

To apply, interested students must be nominated by their schools. No university can nominate more than four students, and each doctoral program within a university is limited to two nominations (e.g., two from the business school and two from the I/O program). Universities with multiple departments seeking to send students should coordinate their nominations.

In making the decision to accept students, preference is given to those who have made the most progress toward completing their Ph.D. program but have not yet defended their dissertation.

Schools are therefore encouraged to nominate fourth or fifth year students who are working on their dissertations, as opposed to third year students who are not yet dealing with the topics discussed in the consortium. There is an Academy-sponsored, all-day doctoral consortium for new students as well as a new 4-hour "halfway there" doctoral consortium sponsored by the OB Division for students at earlier stages in their programs.

Please note that the consortium is not open to those who have already completed their Ph.D. degree. New faculty will find the Junior Faculty Consortium more appropriate for their interests.

The consortium begins on Friday August 7th at <st1:time minute="0" hour="16" w:st="on">4:00 p.m.</st1:time> and will continue with a full day (<st1:time minute="0" hour="8" w:st="on">8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.</st1:time>) on Saturday. Participants are expected to attend all of the consortium sessions.

Applications should be sent by the university department that nominates the student and should include in the body of the email:

    • The nominee's name, address, e-mail address, phone and fax numbers,
    • Name of affiliated school and university, and
    • A statement certifying the nominee's completion of doctoral coursework and comprehensive exams by <st1:date year="2009" day="1" month="8" w:st="on">August 1, 2009</st1:date>
    • Two attachments to the e-mail are requested:
      • A letter from a faculty member providing a general appraisal of the nominee, including an assessment of his/her progress toward a dissertation defense, including the expected defense date.
      • A one-page bio summarizing the nominee's contact information, research (including dissertation) and teaching interests, and publications. This one-page bio will be distributed among consortium participants.

Please send nominations and supporting materials by May 20, 2009 via email to Michelle Duffy at duffy111@umn.edu
