Dear AOM ListServ Colleagues (MG-ED-DV, OB, OMT, ORGCULT),

As a doctoral student in the Fielding Graduate University's Human and Organization Development program, I am conducting a cognitive development study to explore complex reasoning (level measurement and exploration of causative experiences for higher levels).  While the study is centered on executives and mangers and, more specifically, those of the energy industry, I invite all to participate (including professors, students, and development professionals, as well as passing this note to their networks and listservs).  Such diverse participation will ensure, first, strong comparative statistics and, second, feasibility of generalizing to other groups and industries.  It is a short survey!  .

The purpose of the study is to further our understanding of the way the energy professional develops complex reasoning ability and, thereby, to facilitate a discussion among colleagues concerned with the duel problem of an aging (soon to retire) energy industry workforce and the demand for junior personnel to assume more complex and demanding roles and responsibilities.

It is comprised of two sets of executive-subordinate interactions during which an assignment preparation is discussed (problem discussed and resolutions are explored). Each of the two sets consists of five short vignettes, each consisting of a few sentences.  You will be asked to read the vignettes and answer eight multiple choice questions.  It also includes a development inventory (e.g., years of experience, educational level, organizational positions held).

    ·         The multiple choice section of the instrument will take less than 15 minutes to complete.
    ·         You can begin the instruments and take a break at anytime, coming back later to complete.
    ·         The instructions for doing the survey are included in the instrument.
    ·         Your participation is completely voluntary.
    ·         Your responses will be considered as strictly anonymous and confidential.
    ·         This study has been reviewed and approved by the Fielding Institutional Review Board.
