Our Program trains students for academic careers. A student in our program develops an original program of research in order to assume a tenure-track faculty appointment at a research-oriented university. 94.6% of graduates from the past 20 years are currently in academic positions. Examples of placements include the University of Washington, University of Alberta, University of Michigan, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Our Program guarantees funding to successful students for five years. Students take two years of coursework, learn about the research process through collaborative projects, pass comprehensive exams, gain teaching experience, and launch their own research programs. We admit students with distinguished undergraduate or master's records. Typical backgrounds of incoming students include the social sciences and humanities, engineering, and business administration.

UBC is situated in one of the best cities in the world in which to live. Metro Vancouver enjoys a multicultural population of 2.5 million, is a short drive to Whistler, and is surrounded by a beautiful landscape that inspires outdoor enjoyment.
