How actors exert agency to change and resist the social structures, institutions and organizations they are embedded within has been a central theme in organizational studies (Seo & Creed, 2002). While often investigated by distinct theoretical domains, studies of resistance, social movements, and institutional change/work have in common their desire to document how actors (try to) change organizational and societal structures (Collinson, 1994; King & Pearce, 2010; Knights & McCabe, 2000; Lawrence, Suddaby, & Leca, 2009). Recently social media has been touted as changing the dynamics of interaction within society and thus the potential and forms of agency. Yet the results from early studies on social media leave us unsure of whether social media has fulfilled or failed its potential to transform the possibilities of embedded agency. The purpose of this symposium is to bring together scholars from distinct theoretical backgrounds who are conducting work on social media and create a forum for discussion on the ways in which it influences the study of agency.
If you are working with or interested in social media and diverse forms of agency do not miss this session!
