AOM PDW: Exploring More Effective Ways to Study Board Effectiveness

Saturday, August 6, 8-10:30am at the Hilton Anaheim in the Santa Monica room

    Abstract

Boards of directors remain an important research topic for organizational and strategy scholars. Much of the current and historical research on boards is based on theories or empirical models that assume that monitoring is the most important role for boards to play. However, recent research suggests that boards are not very likely to effectively monitor managers on an ongoing basis (Boivie, Bednar, Aguilera, & Andrus, 2016; Hambrick, Misangyi, & Park, 2015). Consequently, there is both a challenge and an opportunity for scholars who study boards to develop new theory, conduct research in different empirical settings, and to look at alternative outcomes in order to truly examine board effectiveness. This PDW will allow a number of prominent corporate governance scholars to discuss how they are trying to study board effectiveness today. Furthermore, after a panel discussion, members of the panel will participate in breakout sessions centered on discussing specific subtopics, new conceptual perspectives and constructs, and analytical methods to studying boards

Panelists and scholars at the roundtables include: Ruth Aguilera, Vilmos Misangyi, Karen Schatterly, Christy Shropshire, Anja Tuschke, David Zhu, Michael Bednar, Jim Westphal, Steve Boivie, Wei Shen, and Mike Withers.
