CRUCIBLES OF LEADERSHIP – EXPLORING DEPTH WORK IN ORGANISATIONS

    Thursday 3 – Saturday 5 September 2015

    Prince Albert, South Africa

    Introduction

You are invited to attend the first ever Depth Leadership Conference in South Africa:  Crucibles of Leadership. The purpose of this new conference is to develop the theory, practice and community that apply depth psychology principles and processes to leadership and organisational work. Crucibles of Leadership will explore important concepts which are applicable to leaders of a wide variety of organisations.

    What is "depth" leadership?

We coined the term "depth leadership" to refer to a leadership approach that uses the theories and practices of "depth" psychology, the branch of clinical psychology theories which embrace the notion of the unconscious mind.  These theories argue that human behaviour is not only driven by conscious intention, but also by a complex set of unconscious processes.

Depth psychology has been a formal sub-discipline within clinical psychology for more than 150 years and the original theories were developed by Pierre Janet, William James, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Otto Rank, Melanie Klein and others. The term "depth psychology" (from the original German "Tiefenpsychologie") was coined by Eugen Bleuler in 1910. The original theorists used different names to describe their particular theory: Freud's work is known as psychoanalysis; Jung's as analytical psychology (or  psychodynamic theory); and Melanie Klein's as object relations theory.  These theories have come a long way since they were conceived, and in this conference, we will explore how the ideas from this branch of psychology can be helpful to leaders and organisations, without favouring any one particular theory. Participants are not required to be familiar with the core theories that constitute depth psychology. The conference is aimed at developing greater awareness of the potential value of integrating depth psychology thinking with leadership and organisational work, and exposing participants to concepts and processes that they may wish to apply in their own contexts. It offers an opportunity to get to know and share ideas with other leaders who are implementing depth psychology thinking and practices in their organisations, thereby developing the existing depth leadership community.

    Speakers

We are inviting two different groups of speakers to contribute :

    ·         specialists in depth psychology in leadership and organisational settings who will share their knowledge and practices with the participants

    ·         leaders in organisational settings who have applied depth psychology in their work with themselves and their organisations and  who will share their  successes, their challenges and their learning  with the participants

If you have particular expertise in areas of depth psychology and you would like to join us in Prince Albert as a speaker, please let us know by emailing helene@depthleadership.co.za.  Sessions will last about one hour each and allow for participation with the audience. Unfortunately, speakers will not be paid for speaking, but they will receive accommodation and travelling assistance.
