    POST-DOCTORAL SCHOLAR POSITION

ESSEC Business School is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar at its Asia-Pacific campus in Singapore to support a one year project on political leaders of India. The expected start date is 15 March 2018. This is a one year appointment. Review of applications will begin on 20 February 2018 and will continue until a suitable candidate is selected.

The purpose of this project is to understand if, and how, political leaders matter. In particular, it uses the divergence in economic outcomes in Indian states as an opportunity to examine the role of leaders. These indicators include state gross domestic products, school enrollment and drop-out rates, skilled labor generation, electricity generation and consumption, rural electrification, connectivity and transportation indices, law and order indices, availability of capital, and industrial disputes for seventeen states of India over a period of fifty years. Preliminary findings show wide variation amongst the states highlighting the importance of granular data at sub-national levels. The project will exploit data on state-level political leaders and their cabinets to explain this regional variation within a democracy. A large database containing all available demographic data on the elected leaders – age, gender, caste, education, marital status, profession, religion, conviction records, assets, international exposure, work experience, and campaign expenditure – has been put together.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will have three responsibilities: data set design and development, including additional data collection; statistical analysis of the data; and collaboration in the development of research papers and conference presentations. He or she will be invited to participate in the research activities at ESSEC Business School such as seminars and workshops, and will have access to databases.

The monthly salary will be between SGD 6,250 to 6,500.

Applicants need to fulfill following requirements:

    • PhD or equivalent Doctoral degree (must be completed before the start date of the Postdoctoral Scholarship) in statistics, economics, sociology, management, or related fields.
    • Strong skills in time series analysis, survival analysis and Stata
    • Strong skills in database management
    • Demonstrated interest and research on topics related to the Indian context
