    Showcase symposium
Bridging Institutional Analysis with Micro Cultural Dynamics in Explaining Environment Sustainability

    Tuesday 5th August 1:15 - 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 113C

This symposium unpacks the black box of environmental sustainability to focus on issues such as water, agriculture, energy, and renewables. Defining sustainability-as-flourishing, "the possibility that humans and other life will flourish on the Earth forever" (Ehrenfeld & Hoffman, 2013:7), the four empirical papers in this symposium probe how actors construct, negotiate and interpret meanings around water scarcity, waste management, sustainability and "dirty" energy. We focus our attention on both macro level institutional logics such as the state and the community, and micro level interactions through which these higher-order logics are negotiated to create different meanings and lines of future actions that have consequences for the act of sustaining. The intersection of culture and institutional analysis will enable us to develop deeper understanding of the micro dynamics of environmental sustainability, and yield new insights to the role of culture in institutional creation, maintenance and change.
