    AOM PDW: Expertise and Organizations

Sunday, August 11, 2024, 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM | Location: Fairmont: Embassy Room

Are you interested in the topic of expertise in relation to work and organization? Join us at the AOM PDW on "Expertise in and Around Organizations: Taking Stock and Moving Forward"!

    Summary:

Management scholars have a long-standing interest in expertise, a phenomenon, and a concept with significant consequences for important individual, group, organizational, occupational, and institutional practices and outcomes. Organizational research has so far approached the topic from various perspectives that draw on rich and varied traditions of studying expertise across social and behavioral sciences. However, challenges around conceptual and definitional clarity, as well as unclear distinctiveness from related concepts like knowledge, skill, and learning, may hinder the value of the concept in studying important contemporary phenomena that shape and are shaped by expertise. Experts and expertise also face significant contestation and change, due to phenomena including, but not limited to, emerging technologies like generative artificial intelligence and automation; media issues like mis- and disinformation; and political trends such as populism and polarization. It is, therefore, imperative to take stock of how expertise has been considered in organizational research, and further, chart a way forward for future research. By taking stock of previous research and exploring new avenues for inquiry in contemporary organizations, our PDW thus aims to focus on how management and organization scholars can study expertise in and around organizations and contribute to organization and management theory.

Our PDW will stimulate discussion and reflection on this question through presentations and a panel discussion. Through facilitated roundtables, we will encourage new scholars to engage with the study of expertise, and throughout the program, build community around the study of expertise in and around organizations.

No pre-registration for the event is required. We look forward to seeing you at the PDW.

    Very best,

    The Organizers

AOM Presenter Symposium: Firm Strategic Responses to Political Polarization Around the World

    Jul 26, 2024 6:45 PM

    Yu Li

    Dear Colleagues,

We cordially invite you to attend our presenter symposium "Firm Strategic Responses to Political Polarization around the World" at the AOM conference.

Abstract: This presenter symposium showcases research frontiers on firms' strategic responses to the market and non-market challenges that arise from political polarization in both domestic and international contexts. These range from underexamined, non-ideological predictors of corporate and CEO activism on contentious socio-political issues (e.g., corporate reputation, CEO narcissism) to the influence of stakeholders on the expanding venues (e.g., corporate campaign contributions, corporate LGBTQ policies) of corporate activism; and implications of political polarization for international business (e.g., divestiture). The four presentations in this symposium adopt a range of methodological approaches (e.g., matched-sample regressions, machine learning techniques, and difference-in-differences designs), and collectively contribute to the existing literature on corporate and CEO activism, stakeholder management, non-market strategies, corporate political activities, social issues in management, and international management.

    Time & location

    📅 Sunday, August 11, 2024

    14:15 – 15:15 CT (GMT-5/UTC-5)

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Business Ethics in Chile

    Jul 26, 2024 2:11 AM  |    view attached

    Ignacio Pavez

    Dear Colleagues,

I am glad to share with you this call for a postdoctoral fellowship in business ethics. The fellowship is offered by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) with the joint participation of the Institute of Applied Ethics (IAE), the School of Management (SM), and the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD).

The call is broad since we are hoping to initiate this track of research at UC. The proposed project should preferably focus on the following thematic areas: business ethics, corporate ethics, ethics in management, ethics for sustainability, ethics for market regulation, among others. The project will be carried out under the supervision of Professors Alejandra Marinovic (IAE) and Ignacio Pavez (SM and ISD).

It offers excellent conditions for recent graduates or early-career academics who would like to work in Latin America, including travel and installation expenses for foreign researchers.

The call has a tight deadline (August 23rd), but the application form is simple. Please see the attached document with the details of the call.

We would appreciate it very much if you could spread this information to potential candidates or interested faculty. We would be happy to receive any questions at alejandra.marinovic@uc.cl or ipavez@uc.cl.

    Best wishes,

    Ignacio
