AoM Symposium : Is It Possible? Fairness as a Goal in Organizational Decision-Making

    Tuesday, Jul 29 2025 , 10:15AM - 11:45AM CEST (GMT+2/UTC+2)
    Location:  Bella Center in MR17

Sponsored by OMT and STR divisions

We continue the conversation on the challenges of managing multiple organizational goals. In 2023 (Boston), we discussed organization design challenges of achieving multiple goals. In 2024 (Chicago), we took a stakeholder management lens and discussed multiple goals in a world of polarized stakeholders. This year's symposium focuses on the feasibility and implementation of fairness as an organizational objective.

Today's managers face increasing pressure to balance environmental and  social goals alongside traditional financial and operational targets, from a growing array of stakeholders - including board members, rating agencies, media, government, and employees expressing political and social values.

Fairness is deeply tied to moral considerations, social values, and public expectations. Organizations that fail to address fairness risk being seen as unethical or exploitative, threatening their trustworthiness and legitimacy.

This symposium explores two central questions:

    1. Is fairness a realistic, achievable, important  organizational objective? What are the main obstacles?
    2. What specific, actionable practices can organizations adopt to make fairness a guiding principle?

Featuring insights from leading scholars and moderated by Cindy Muir, this session promises a rich discussion on practical implementation and future research directions.
