PDW Overview
Research in organization design, understood as encompassing the three key components of organizational structure, decision systems, and managerial practices, has recently undergone a renaissance with organizational scholars. Despite this upsurge in popularity, a study on organizational design can be highly challenging to publish. Theoretically, given the breadth of organization design, scholars risk framing research too widely or too narrowly to compel readers. Among some readers, it is also still perceived as an “old topic,” requiring scholars to tease out a novel contribution and demonstrate the need for new research. And, empirically, it is difficult to collect large-sample data and accurately measure various dimensions of organizational design, as this sensitive information is often not publicly available.
To help scholars navigate these challenges, we have gathered editors of leading management journals with expertise in this topic. In the first part of our PDW, the editors will share their experiences and advice on successfully publishing papers in the domain of organization structure and design. In the second part, attendees will undertake roundtable discussions to discuss their research project ideas, receiving feedback from the PDW organizers and panelists.
Journals represented in the PDW include Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Management Science, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Strategy Science, and the Journal of Organization Design.
