Please join our panel symposium on "The Material and Symbolic Aspects of Management Concepts." New management concepts serve as new guidelines for managers tackling challenges in the ever-changing environment of modern organizations. Their longstanding popularity is reflected in the historical ebb and flow of various concepts, ranging from scientific management and quality, to agile and purpose, over the past century. However, significant complexity still surrounds how we conceive of and study management concepts. This symposium aims to unravel this complexity by discussing the material and symbolic facets in the development and organizational application of management concepts. Following an introduction by one of the organizers, William Ocasio, our distinguished panelists, Paul Adler and Dennis Jancsary, will share their theoretical perspectives, while our presenters, Deepika Chhillar and Jinah Ryu, will showcase empirical approaches to studying management concepts. Through a moderated discussion, this symposium seeks to crystallize how scholars can conceive of management concepts and encourage further research in this domain.
We hope to see you there!
