WBS Extreme Contexts Summit
September 15th-16th at the Shard, London, 2025
Extreme contexts research is a rapidly developing field of management studies that focuses on organisation and work in risky, emergency, and disrupted settings (Hällgren, Rouleau, & de Rond, 2018). To provide professional development for those of us interested in the field, showcase the latest research, and set new directions, we're delighted to announce that Warwick Business School will be hosting the inaugural Extreme Contexts Summit at the Shard, London Campus this September 15th-16th.
Extreme contexts include organisational settings where operations are constantly exposed to risks of harmful events (e.g. oil drilling, storm chasing, prisons), organisations and occupations that are designed to respond to emergencies (e.g. emergency departments, police, firefighting), and where organisations are disrupted by unexpected and sometimes horrific events like wars, terrorism, natural disasters, and pandemics.
The Summit will feature keynote presentations by leading scholars in the field, paper development sessions led by content and methodological experts in extreme contexts research, opportunities to connect with others in the community, and an exciting field trip!
To register and for more information, please visit the WBS Extreme Contexts website: 2025 Extreme Context Summit
We hope to see you there!
What will the event include?
- Keynote presentations by leading scholars in the field, including Prof. Mark de Rond (University of Cambridge), Prof. Markus Hällgren (Umeå University), and Prof. April Wright (Warwick Business School)
- Paper development sessions where you can get ideas and feedback for empirical or theoretical studies, especially aimed at early career researchers
- Meeting with colleagues in the field with views over London from the Shard
- An exciting fieldtrip to connect and engage with a local emergency response organisation

This event is aimed at scholars who have an interest in extreme contexts research, including early career researchers (e.g., PhD student, postdoc, assistant professor) as well as mid- and late-career researchers (e.g., associate and full professor). Extreme contexts research has been an international and interdisciplinary endeavour, and we welcome scholars from different academic disciplines, including management and organisation, other social sciences, and applied fields.
How can I apply?
To apply, please visit our website and submit a statement describing (1) your interest in extreme contexts and (2) how the Summit can support your research: this may be anything from obtaining access to field sites or theorising empirical work, right up to help finalising a draft paper. The website can be found here 2025 Extreme Context Summit. The direct link to the application form can be found here: Extreme Contexts Summit
