Saturday, Aug 10 2024 2:30PM - 4:00PM CT (GMT-5/UTC-5) at Marriott in Salon F
In this workshop, we aim to move the debate about the negative impact of social media on democracies and their markets, more specifically towards potential solutions as to what can be done about the diametral effect of these technologies and their associated markets on democratic societies. By inviting scholars arguing from different yet, potentially complementary perspectives as to who or what can save democracy from social media, we aim to reinvigorate further the scholarly debate on these technologies and their potential harmful impact on society and management.
Expert speakers and participants will engage in an interactive debate. The discussion will offer the possibility to address and expand on the following questions: 1) What speaks for or against the respective perspective and its proposed 'solution' as to who or what can save democracy from the harmful effects of social media? 2) What open questions can this perspective yield for future research?
Our participants and perspectives:
- Entrepreneurship Perspective (Donato Cutolo, IE University, Spain)
- Social Evaluation Perspective (Christian Fieseler, BI, Norway)
- Platform perspective (Annabelle Gawer, University of Surrey, UK)
- Communication perspective (Itziar Castelló-Molina, Bayes Business School, UK)
- Moral agency perspective (Cristina Neesham, Newcastle University, UK)
- Governance perspective (Andreas Georg Scherer, University of Zurich, Switzerland)
Looking forward to a great debate.
All the best, Andreas Scherer, Hannah Trittin and Itziar Castello
