    CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

    STR Managing Your Dissertation Workshop

    Pre-registration Deadline: July 22, 2023

    (Registration link: https://forms.gle/PBihGx4hb4g8sSS68)

The STR Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity (in person) for doctoral students in strategy at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management on Sunday Aug 6, 2023, at 09:00 PM - 01:00 PM EST (UTC-4) in Boston. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertations and transitioning to their first academic positions. Pre-registration from students is required. A tentative program schedule is attached with this announcement.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. The finalists for last year's STR Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Agnes Guenther (PhD CBS), Aldona Kapačinskaitė (PhD LBS), Anparasan Mahalingam (PhD Purdue), Daniel Sands (PhD NYU), Christopher Sabel (PhD BI Norwegian). The format of the PDW will mix plenary presentations by senior faculty followed by Q&As, and breakout discussion groups led by last year's finalists for the STR Outstanding Dissertation Award. The following is a partial list of faculty members who have agreed to participate in the workshop: Jay Barney (Utah), Gino Cattani (NYU), Sendil Ethiraj (LBS), Olenka Kacperczyk (LBS), Richard Makadok (Ohio State), Amir Sasson (BI Norwegian), Tony Tong (Colorado Boulder).

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow for interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

Interested doctoral students should pre-register at https://forms.gle/PBihGx4hb4g8sSS68. The deadline to pre-register is July 22, 2023. This workshop historically has been very selective, so early registration is required. If you have any questions, please contact Anparasan Mahalingam (amahalin@syr.edu).
