Organization and Management Theory

We hope you are well in this unsettled time. As you are most probably aware, the Academy of Management (AOM) in April that this year’s Annual Meeting will be entirely virtual. Part II of the OMT Spring newsletter includes important announcements from the Executive Committee about the virtual conference.

In the Executive Committee of the OMT Division, we are working on adapting OMT’s program to the virtual conference. We are aiming to extend our synchronous program offer beyond the Academy’s recommendation, which is to limit the synchronous part of the program to consortia and 10% of accepted PDWs, symposia and papers. We hope to offer the majority of our PDWs synchronously as well as close to 15% of our scholarly program.

For this year’s online conference, both the PDW program and the Scholarly program will offer synchronous events during the full conference period, August 7-11, spanning three time blocks:

Block A: 3-7 am PDT / 6-10 am EDT / 12-4 pm CEDT/ 8 pm-12 am AEST

Block B: 9 am-1 pm PDT /12-4 pm EDT / 6-10 pm CEDT/ 2-6 am AEST

Block C: 4-7 pm PDT / 7-10 pm EDT / 1-4 am CEDT/ 9 am-12 pm AEST

OMT's PDW Program

OMT’s PDW Chair, Eva Boxenbaum, is working intensively with our PDW organizers and the Academy’s Leadership to put on a dynamic and exciting PDW program for the OMT Division during the 2020 virtual conference. Three quarters of our PDW organizers have expressed a preference for hosting their PDW synchronously, which we are hoping to accommodate in the program. We see a great potential for collective learning and development in honoring the high engagement and community spirit of our committed PDW organizers.

In the meantime, OMT announces the following division-sponsored PDWs to appear on our synchronous program:

OMT Junior Faculty Consortium

This is OMT’s consortium for early career faculty (primarily tenure-track). Through panels and facilitated conversations with senior faculty mentors and peers, participants will have a chance to discuss opportunities and challenges related to developing research for publication, navigating the tenure process, and having impact as a researcher and teacher. The PDW will also include virtual breakout rooms where participants will get individualized feedback on their own research. This session will be held synchronously on Friday August 7 in Block B. Pre-registration is required. More information is available .

OMT Doctoral Student Consortium

This event is for doctoral students who are reaching the end of their doctoral education and wish to discuss opportunities and challenges related to the transition from student to faculty member and the academic job market. Participants will discuss research, teaching, and careers in virtual breakout rooms with like-minded colleagues and established scholars in the field. The session will be held synchronously on Friday August 7 in Block B. Pre-registration is required. More information is available .

OMT Dissertation Proposal Workshop

This is our PDW for doctoral students who are mid-way through their doctoral education and wish to discuss the analytical contours of their dissertation with others at the same developmental stage and an established scholar in the field. The session will be held synchronously, in virtual breakout rooms, on Saturday August 8 in Block B. Pre-registration is required. More information is available .

OMT Global: Doing Organizational Research Around the World

The “OMT Global: Doing Organizational Research Around the World” PDW, previously offered in the OMT off-program series, is now officially part of our divisional events. It aims at reaching out to scholarly communities in areas of the world that are underrepresented in OMT, offering the opportunity to discuss and get feedback on organizational research based in different geographical contexts across the world. The session will be held synchronously on Saturday August 8 in time Block A. Pre-registration is required. More information is available .

OMT New and Returning Member Networking and Research Forum

This event is for OMT members who recently joined the OMT Division or have recently returned to it. This session will be interactive and run synchronously in Block B on a different day of the conference than the previous four events. The forum is designed so that participants can meet leading scholars in the OMT division, meet other new members of the division, and discuss research with scholars who share similar interests. Pre-registration is required. More information is available .

NOTE: Covering the fees for PhD Students and Early Career Scholars. OMT is pleased to announce that PhD students and early-career scholars admitted to one of these PDWs can apply for a reimbursement of their registration fee to the Academy virtual conference if their home institution does not offer such reimbursement. The AOM membership fee is not included in this offer. Please contact the PDW organizers for details.

OMT's Scholarly Program

OMT’s Program Chair, Martin Kilduff, has selected an impressive fleet of symposia and papers for presentation during the 2020 virtual conference. All of the Showcase symposia and all of the best papers will be offered synchronously, while the other excellent scholarly contributions will be made available asynchronously during the virtual conference.

In addition to symposia and papers, the OMT Division will host the following classic community events synchronously. We very much hope to ‘see’ you at one or all of these events:

Distinguished Scholar Breakfast

This year’s Distinguished Scholar is Professor from HEC Montréal. Ann Langley has inspired numerous scholars in the OMT community for decades, and she continues to contribute to our scholarly community with groundbreaking ideas and innovative academic initiatives. Ann will deliver her Distinguished Scholar talk in an interactive format in a synchronous session planned for Monday August 10 in Block B.

OMT Business Meeting

The OMT Business Meeting features Division updates and OMT Program information in addition to awards and welcomes/goodbyes to members of the Executive Committee. This session will be offered synchronously on Monday August 10 in Block A.

For more details about OMT’s 2020 award winners, you can read Research Committee Chair Mary-Hunter McDonnell’s

OMT Social

This social event offers members of the OMT Division an opportunity to interact with one another in a free and playful space. Details to follow. The OMT Social will be offered synchronously on Monday August 10 at the end of Block A, immediately after OMT’s Business Meeting.

OMT Cafes

We are continuing our annual tradition of offering OMT cafés, which are popular, topically themed discussions, where scholars come together to meet others with similar interests in casual conversations off-program. Are you interested in hosting a virtual OMT café between time Blocks, or in the period August 12-31? .

In Closing

We look forward to seeing you as part of this year’s virtual conference!
