EGOS Paper Development Workshop - Extending the Conversation in Organization and Management Studies: Bringing Other Voices In

The European Group of Organization Studies (EGOS) is sponsoring a paper development workshop for Advanced PhD students, early career researchers (ECRs) and junior faculty from Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific Region from 21-22 April).  The two-day workshop is being hosted by the Organizational Discourse, Strategy and Change Group (ODSC) at the University of Sydney Business School.

EGOS as well as its two journals OS and OT firmly embrace diversity of all kinds, inviting a pluralistic approach to understanding organizations (Cornelissen & Höllerer, 2020; Meyer & Quattrone, 2021). Diversity and plurality rely on organization studies scholars engaging in conversations with others inside and outside our field – and on listening to other voices. This workshop seeks to extend the conversations in our field, bringing in a wider range of voices to generate new forms of knowledge (Cutcher et al., 2020).

Extending the conversation enables us to reflect on our own position of privilege and to acknowledge that dominant ways of studying organizations have been sustained by knowledge disciplines and institutions of the West and Global North. Extending the conversation generates multidisciplinary initiatives that bring together scholars from multiple disciplines who, together, can better tackle 'wicked problems' and 'grand challenges' (Brammer et al., 2019) such as climate change, the global emergence of novel risks, as well as crises and extreme events. Extending the conversation encourages organizational scholars to study diverse organizations and their impact on society in ways that highlight issues of equity, justice, and power.

Bringing in other voices provides an opportunity to engage with the limits of our knowledge, challenge prevailing notions and inspire novel ideas, making way for alternative theories of organization (Cornelissen et al., 2021). It also directs our attention towards impact and engagement i.e. "the contribution that research makes to the economy, society, environment or culture, beyond the contribution to academic research" (ARC Research Impact Principles and Framework, 2019). The aim of extending the conversation is to develop ideas that allow organization theory not just to listen to new and different voices, but to contribute in a positive way to their experiences.

We invite papers that extend the conversation by:

    • Bringing in marginalised and excluded voices, including (but by no means limited to): indigenous peoples, members of the LGBTQI community, people of colour, stigmatized peoples, and those for whom English is not a first language
    • Engaging with protesting voices, activists, anarchists, those proposing alternatives
    • Fostering a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing wicked problems

In addition to papers that fit with the theme of the workshop, we are also open to submissions that explore organizational phenomena more broadly.

This PDW, co-sponsored by EGOS and the ODSC group at the University of Sydney Business School, seeks to provide developmental opportunities for advanced PhD students and early career scholars who are engaged in research in the field of organization and management studies (from a social science tradition). The PDW will help participants develop their research and academic writing skills. It also seeks to increase participants' awareness of the requirements, expectations, and procedures involved in the review processes at top peer-reviewed academic journals through presentations and first-hand discussion with established scholars and editors of journals such as Organization Studies and Organization Theory.

We aim to support participants in developing their manuscripts into conference papers to be successfully submitted to events such as the EGOS Colloquium and/or the OMT Division of the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (since such conference presentations are an important step towards publication) or to make existing manuscripts ready for submission to top-tier journals.

The workshop is free of charge and refreshments/meals are provided. Travel and accommodation have to be organized and covered by participants. A limited number of stipends will be offered to cover at least part of the cost for travel and accommodation for participants who need it and who cannot obtain (sufficient) funding from their home institutions. Please indicate in your application if you would like to be considered for financial support (max. AUD 500.00) and confirm, in this case, that you have no or only limited funding from your home institution.

To apply for this PDW, please submit a brief motivation letter explaining why you think you are a good candidate for this workshop, how you will benefit, and how the workshop fits your research interests and current stage of career. In your submission, please also include an extended abstract of an unpublished manuscript that you wish to develop further during the workshop. The abstract should include an explanation as to the purpose of the paper, the theoretical background and, for empirical papers, the methodological approach.

For the workshop, each participant will be asked to peer-review one or several papers of other participants to adequately prepare.

Applications should be sent as a single PDF file to Leanne Cutcher (leanne.cutcher@sydney.edu.au), using the subject line 'PDW Sydney'.

Deadline for submission: 31 January 2022

Notification of acceptance: 9 February 2022

Deadline for submission of the full paper for the PDW (in case of acceptance): 4 April 2022.
