The I. H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba (UM) is pleased to invite applications for a tenured or tenure-track position for an Indigenous Scholar. This opportunity is open to individuals who are Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit). The appointment is open rank (assistant, associate or full professor) depending on experience and qualifications. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023 or sooner.
This position builds on the Asper School's ongoing commitment to promote reconciliation through business scholarship at all levels and throughout our relations with the business community (as entrenched in our strategic plan Pursuing our Asper-ations. The School's Committee on Indigenous Business Scholarship (CIBS) is one of the four standing committees of our Faculty Council, and our Indigenous Business Education Partners (IBEP) program was founded in 1994 to attract and support Indigenous students from application to graduation including in their development as leaders. IBEP initiatives such the Visionary Indigenous Business Excellence Awards (VIBE, founded in 2005) and the annual Future of Indigenous Business Banquet (co-hosted by University of Manitoba Indigenous Commerce Students) add to our vibrant faculty culture. In short, we seek to be a community in which Indigenous scholars and students succeed, lead, and thrive. Our efforts are enhanced by deep infrastructural supports at the UM such as the Office of the Vice-President Indigenous. The UM is home to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and takes its commitment to Reconciliation seriously.
Essential to our success in this strategy, we are recruiting for two Indigenous designated faculty positions, one Tenured/Tenure track and one full time/permanent Instructor position (separate advertisement). For the Tenured/Tenure track position, we seek candidates who hold a PhD, or are near completion of a PhD, in any business/management area or related fields (e.g., Indigenous studies, history, economics, politics), and a knowledge of the importance of history and TRC Call to A for business education.
Duties include research, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels (including student mentorship and supervision), and professional service for the School, University, and community. We explicitly recognize that Indigenous scholarship often involves extra responsibilities vis-a-vis community service and research, and these will be considered in assigning duties and in tenure guidelines.
The Indigenous Scholar will be expected to contribute to the research excellence of our School and to strengthen our graduate programs. We expect their research will be informed by their academic background and interests, and that they will benefit from and contribute to the cross-disciplinary and intra-departmental collaboration important to the Asper School. The successful candidate will have access to both financial and collegial support for their research, including the opportunity to belong to a community of over 50 Indigenous scholars at the UM. Substantial start-up research funding is provided, as is a fully paid six-month sabbatical after three years.
The normal teaching load at the Asper School is four courses, with a possibility to teach three courses in the initial year (i.e., one teaching release). We welcome and expect the successful candidate to provide input and guidance especially for courses related to Indigenous content. This includes a new course entitled "Indigenous Peoples and Canadian Business," which is in the final stages of approval to become a core course for all Asper undergraduate students. This is the first such core course in a business program in Canada we are aware of. The successful candidate may develop new Asper courses in their discipline which can be added to those in Asper's longstanding Indigenous Business Studies Program, a multi-disciplinary program where students can earn a Bachelor of Commerce with a Major in Indigenous Business Studies. There is also an opportunity to introduce a graduate course(s) related to the candidate's field.

At the Assistant rank, candidates are asked to present a promising research agenda in their field and experience or interest in teaching in related sub-areas. At the Associate or Full rank, candidates would demonstrate an established research program with quality publications and other outputs appropriate to their field, evidence of an active research program, and successful experience in postsecondary teaching. Salary and rank will depend on qualifications, experience as well as research and teaching records.
Successful candidates close to completion of their doctoral degree may be appointed to the rank of Lecturer until successful completion of their PhD, at which time they will begin their probationary appointment as an Assistant Professor.

The Indigenous economy in Manitoba is growing at a rapid pace. While in 2016 it was estimated that the Indigenous contribution to GDP was in excess of 9.3 billion dollars, this figure is set to grow as a result of a very active Indigenous business community. For example, the national Indigenous Chamber of Commerce was founded in Winnipeg in 2004; the Métis Economic Development Organization (MEDO) provides leadership to the Manitoba Métis Federation (founded in 1967) and a number of Métis economic hubs across Manitoba. More recently, the Treaty One Development Corporation (T1DC) fosters economic growth through strategic development on Treaty One Lands, including its 1.3 billion dollar development of Winnipeg's Naawi-Oodena(https://news.umanitoba.ca/naawi-oodena-centre-of-the-heart-and-community-to-become-canadas-largest-urban-reserve/).
